Press Release
2nd Annual On Ice Olympics for Youth on Gull Lake, Brainerd MN
It’s fun, exciting,
educational and free!
Returning by popular
demand to the largest ice fishing contest in the world is the On
Ice Tour’s “On Ice Olympics”.
The On Ice Olympics is an
activity and contest that was developed by the On Ice Tour
specially for youth as a way to introduce young people to the
sport of ice fishing. Participants will engage in a variety of ice
fishing situations, which test their knowledge and piscatorial
savvy. Youth participate in four age categories with a lack of ice
angling experience are encouraged. Even though the Olympics are
free, On Ice Tour insures that everyone is rewarded with a bag of
ice fishing related goodies. Top placing anglers will also receive
great prizes from Coleman Outdoors, StrikeMaster Ice Augers,
Berkley, Northland Tackle and Lindy Tackle, during a special
awards ceremony on top of the big stage, center ice at the
Brainerd Jaycee’s Ice Fishing Extravaganza January 18th, 2003,
Gull Lake, Minnesota.
Through a course of
simulated ice fishing situations youth anglers experience
activities such as; “quickly removing slush from a hole”, “setting
up a portable fish house”, “species identification”, “reeling a
fish in” and others all designed to be fun and educational.
Ultimately, On Ice Tour’s goal is to expose young folks to the
great sport of ice fishing and teach some technique and aquatic
biology along the way. Smiles and laughs are a big part of the On
Ice Olympics.
Each station along the
Olympic trail is manned by an On Ice Tour pro angler and/or a
fishing celebrity. The pro’s encourage the angler along the way
making the experience exciting and fun. During the 2002 contest
the start official was In-Fisherman’s Professional Walleye Trial (PWT)
Executive Director and TV Personality Jim Kalkofen. Scheduled to
work with the youth in 2003 are professional ice anglers, pro
walleye and bass anglers and of course On Ice Tours founder Chip
Leer will be rooting everyone along.
Contestants are grouped by
age: 8-years and under, 9-11 years, 12-14 years and 15 years and
older. The three fastest times in each age bracket will not only
receive some awesome prizes, they will be presented with Gold,
Silver and Bronze Medals embossed with the On ice Tour Olympics
logo. Surly a keepsake for any aspiring young angler. All in all
over $5000.00 in cash, prizes and medals is given away at the On
Ice Tour Olympics. The awards and prizes are presented by Chip
Leer after the conclusion of the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Extravaganza
