Brainerd Lake Area -
Minnesota
January 9,
2004
This week's cold temperatures have produced
excellent ice conditions in the Brainerd Lakes area. Gull and
Pelican lakes continued to produce walleyes throughout the last
week. The best action can be found away from the crowds. Seek
out the shallow structures adjacent to deep water areas. The key
depths have varied from lake to lake. But the general rule has
been deep during the day and shallower after dark. Don't
be afraid to stay a few hours after sunset. The best walleye bite
has been occurring later in the evenings in 20 to 24 feet of
water. Jigging spoons tipped with rainbow chubs have been
producing fish along with shinners on rattle reels. The northern
bite was a bit slower this week. But the action continues to be
good. Tip ups with sucker minnows have been producing fish in 8 to
15 feet of water. Search for the big weed flats that are close to
a break and wait for the little red flag to fly. The sunfish
action remained slow, but there have been reports of good crappie
action on Gull, Clamshell, and Hubert lake.
