APPLY FOR GIFFORD POINT ACCESS PERMITS JULY 15 - AUGUST 15

LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters interested in hunting deer at the Gifford Point Wildlife Management Area (WMA) during Nebraskas 2005 deer season may apply for access permits from July 15 through August 15, according to Pat Molini, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commissions District V wildlife manager.

Molini said a total of 200 authorization permits will be issued that allow deer hunters to gain access to the area.

To be eligible to apply for these permits, hunters must have a valid statewide archery, muzzleloader or Season Choice Area 21 deer permit. Successful applicants will be issued a key to the access gate that leads into the wildlife area. Only persons who hold a valid access authorization will be allowed on the area from September 1 through the end of all valid deer hunting seasons.

Two deer hunters who want to hunt together may apply as “buddies” to ensure that both or neither will draw an access permit. Both applications must be submitted in the same envelope. A buddy permit does not allow party hunting. Each individual must harvest his or her own deer.

Vehicle access will be limited to the rock road directly adjacent to the 8-foot deer fence on Educational Service Unit property. Only foot travel will be allowed in the interior of the area.

Application forms are available at Commission offices in Omaha, Lincoln, Ak-Sar- Ben Aquarium and Schilling WMA. If more than 200 applications are received, a drawing will be held August 17 at the Commissions Lincoln office.

For additional information, contact Neal Van Winkle at the Schilling WMA at (402) 296-0041 or Molini at (402) 783-3408.

KEARNEY-AREA MENTORED YOUTH ARCHERY HUNT APPLICATIONS DUE AUG. 1

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is taking applications from young archers ages 12 - 17 years, who live in Hall, Buffalo, Adams, Phelps and Kearney counties and would like to participate in the 2005 Youth Mentored Archery Deer Hunting Program in the Kearney area, according to Jeff Rawlinson, a Commission outdoor education specialist.

Rawlinson said each youth will be paired with a Nebraska bow hunter education instructor and allowed access to land owned by program partners for the 2005 Nebraska archery deer season, September 15 - November 11 and November 21 - December 31. All state regulations, as well as some additional rules, apply for this program.

The application deadline is August 1. Applications can be obtained from at participating local archery shops, or online at the hunter education section of the Commissions web site at www.outdoornebraska.org.

“The Mentor Program represents an excellent opportunity for youth to gain experience in the exciting world of archery hunting under the watchful eye of an experienced mentor. The hunts occur in areas that provide consistent opportunities and assist land owners with conservation efforts,” Rawlinson said.

MANDATORY BOATING EDUCATION CLASSES SET FOR 14- TO 17-YEAR-OLDS

LINCOLN, Neb. – Classes are now forming for 14- to 17-year-olds who must successfully complete a boating safety course before operating a boat or personal watercraft in the state.

Everyone under 18 years of age who wants to operate a boat, including personal watercraft in Nebraska, must have successfully completed a boating safety course and have a valid boating safety certificate in his or her possession, according to Herb Angell, Nebraska Boating Law Administrator.

Angell says Nebraska law allows only people 18 years of age and older to operate boats, including personal watercrafts, in Nebraska waters. The only exception is for people ages 14 to 18 who have satisfactorily completed a boating safety course approved by the Commission and who have a valid boating safety certificate in their possession.

Nebraska recognizes the successful completion of certified boating safety courses in other states. It is important to note that completion of the Home Study Boating Education Course does not fulfill personal watercraft education requirements for persons under 18 years.

Here are the latest additions to the growing list of Boating Education classes scheduled across the state. For information regarding classes, contact your local Nebraska Game and Parks Commission office or check on the Boating page at www.outdoornebraska.org.
