Key West Florida  Fishing Report
Capt. Larry Cohen's Key West Fishing Report - June/July 2005

The humidity is climbing, the nights don't seem to cool very much, and even the chickens and dogs are seeking the shade of a tree by 8:00 in the morning. Summer is here and the town is pretty quiet for a change. Bonefish and Permit are on the move, yes, there will be Tarpon here and there but this is when the Permit and Bonefish return back upon the flats.

The Bones have been around but have been a little difficult to spot with a chop on the water from the wind. Mr. Permit is returning back after spawning off shore, and is starting to show with some good numbers. Live blue crabs and shrimp are the bait of choice, and don't be afraid to stake out and chum. Crunch up a little bit of shrimp, squid, or a couple of blue crabs and sit back for a while. This should get things stirred up. Usually the sting rays and small sharks will show and then the bonefish should roll
on in, so ya, just need to be a little bit patient.

As far as the permit go, all I can say is that we were in the right place at the right time for more than a few days in a row 100s of permit were crossing the flats and we were surrounded. It was a beautiful sight indeed. After pitching a live blue crab in to the path of a group of fish this was the result. A nice Key West permit.

Looking back the Tarpon made a nice showing this year and the weather for the most part also cooperated. We were able to get a lot of very big fish to the boat and of course a few got away. We also had a few jump in to the boat. Check it out.

I had the opportunity to meet some very nice people and had some experiences that I will not soon forget. One of the highlights was a fellow that was blind and jumped a 100 pound Tarpon on a fly rod.

As our first Tropical depression "Arlene" skirts bye Key West it is just a reminder that Hurricane season is here. Please keep a heads up on the weather. If you have any questions please e-mail.

We are up in Tennessee for a bit on vacation doing a little Trout fishing and R & R, but will be back soon. So, yes we are taking reservations for the rest of the year and we have already booked some days for next years Tarpon season. So plan early.
