More
than Stuffed Fish & Stringers
The Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame awaits summer travelers
Walker,
MN – The halls of museums are associated with dim, yellowed
lighting, creepy stained glass, and ala Scooby Doo, eyes inside
portraits following your every move…
That’s the stereotype.
That’s what kids think about.
But
not at this museum.
And
let’s do away with the museum labeling, because what we’re
talking about is the new Minnesota
Fishing Hall of Fame in Walker, Minnesota.
No cobwebs hanging around here.
Founded
in the spring of 2000, The Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame celebrates
our state’s rich fishing heritage.
Many of North America’s fishing pioneers call Minnesota
home, and the facility pays honor to 20 of the most notable.
From legendary anglers Al and Ron Lindner, to noted writer
and biologist, Dick Sternberg, visitors go on a historical voyage
through fishing’s formidable years.
The
Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame also features The Minnesota Record
Wall, interactive fishing games, film presentations,
library/theatre, a 230’ x 130’ Fishing Hole – complete with
biting sunfish, and retail outlets for sporting folks.
MinnAqua
Program
The
Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame aims to preserve our fishing heritage
by focusing on youth education.
In conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources, the Hall offers the highly regarded MinnAqua Program.
MinnAqua
is an intensive-fishing course geared for youths 6 to 12-years of
age.
Each course covers fish identification, underwater habitat,
catch and release, fishing ethics, safety, and of course,
participants have the opportunity to cast for panfish in the Fishing
Hole.
“Catch
More Fish” Seminar Series
Fishing
success is predicated on knowledge and experience.
And fortunately for Hall visitors, the Leech Lake Guide
Coalition volunteers their time and expertise in the form of cutting
edge seminars.
What
makes these seminars so special is that they target specific species
and times.
For instance, if you were to take in a “Catch More Fish”
seminar in early June, odds are that you’d be hearing about
jigging and rigging for Leech Lake walleyes.
The information you’ll gather can be immediately put to
test on the lake!
Now that’s timely…
New
Line Class Records
Ever
dreamt about nabbing a World Record?
How about a State Record?
Well, realistically, the odds aren’t in your favor.
But with The Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame’s new Line
Class Record program, there’s still a shot at basking in the
limelight.
A
50-foot section of the Hall is dedicated to the recognition of
anglers who’ve scored Line Class Records.
What
is a Line Class Record?
We’ve all heard stories about how Uncle Chip landed a
60-pound catfish on dental floss, right?
Well, that might not qualify, but let’s say that you boat a
50-inch muskie on 4-pound test monofilament.
You better sprint over to the Hall and fill out an
application form!
Basically, Line Class Records are feats in catching big fish
on lighter-than-usual lines for the intended species.
The
Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame is open to the public from Memorial
Day to Labor Day, and can be made available to youth groups at other
times.
