It is "One last time" to dust off the fishing rod before ice locks in the lakes for another winter. "October and November are some of the best times to fish in Iowa because the fish are actively feeding getting ready for next spring," said Marion Conover, chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources' fisheries bureau. "Fish are developing their egg sacks now which requires them to eat a lot, plus they are eating to fatten up for the winter, which is good news for anglers."

Motorists: Watch for Deer on Roads: Motorists are advised to slow down and exercise caution after dark this time of year to reduce the likelihood of encounters with deer along roadways, according to Bill Jensen, big game biologist for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. October, November and December are peak months for deer-vehicle accidents because of increased deer activity during breeding season, young-of-the-year deer are dispersing from their home ranges, and movements from fall cover to wintering cover.

CHANCES OF DEER-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS INCREASE IN OCTOBER, NOVEMBER
Lincoln, Neb. – Because deer are more active during the fall they pose a potentially dangerous threat for both themselves and the occupants of vehicles traveling highways and country roads. With crop harvesting activities getting underway, crop and cover patterns quickly changing, daylight hours becoming shorter and the onset of deer breeding season, deer will have a lot of things to distract them.

A Simple but Valuable Dog Training Command
By Rhett Kermicle: You’ve probably often heard that it’s a good idea to “crate train” your hunting dog. A dog that accepts his crate or travel kennel as a pleasant place is much easier to manage when you’re on a trip. If you don’t have your dog in an outdoor run, a crate can also provide a safe place to keep your dog when you’re away from home for a few hours. This is a better option than leaving him loose in the house or garage where, as most people find out the hard way, a dog will figure out a way to get into trouble if you’re not there to watch him.
