Boundary Waters

WISCONSIN-MICHIGAN BORDER AREA

So you say that you’re going to fish the northern lakes and streams of  Wisconsin this summer, ‘cause you know that’s the area where your dreams of big fish come true.’ Records have been made here; and records are made to be broken. It’s that area where most others are afraid to venture into because of it’s wildness, but you can’t resist the call of the wild in spite of those rumors of rugged terrain, big bear, wolves, and crystal clear nights. That’s not what your concern is, you say. It’s really the factory, the traffic, and the constant clamor of busy people that bothers you. That’s really why you want to escape to northern Wisconsin. If you haven’t escaped yet, come on and soar with the eagles! Here’s just a touch of what you’ll find: Countless lakes and streams teaming with muskies, walleye, northern pike, bass, trout and panfish. Imagine your own “space” on the 43,000 acre lake called Lac Vieux Desert, a lake big enough to touch Phelps and Land ‘O Lakes, Wisconsin and Watersmeet, Michigan. Or, maybe you’d like to explore the Cisco Chain of 15 lakes and 281 miles of shoreline. If you love the forest, then lose yourself in the 21,000 acres of virgin timber, and 36 lakes in the Sylvania Wilderness Area. The  wildlife and breathtaking beauty of all this will astound you. No, you can’t take it with you, but it’ll be waiting for you in any season, leaving you with no other choice, but to come back to fish, hunt, camp, hike, bike, boat, ski or snowmobile in northern Wisconsin.

You’re invited to begin your northern adventure at Northwoods Bait & Tackle (715-545-3326) on Highway 45 East in  Phelps. They’ve made it easier to help you escape to some real fishing adventure by stocking the best live bait in northern Wisconsin. Live bait includes walleye and muskie suckers, mixed bait, fat heads and crappie bait, along with a huge assortment of wax worms, crawlers, and “hot” walleye leaches. In fact, if you need more than what they stock, they’ll have it for you the next day; all at the fairest prices! You’ll appreciate their fine selection of specially designed tackle for the area, as well as convenient camping food and equipment. There’s plenty of “take along” ice cream treats, beverages, pizzas and other necessities. The Northwoods Bait & Tackle puts more fun into fishing. Take along their ad and they’ll give you a free dozen night crawlers with your purchase!  Open 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM

The Tackle Box (715-547-3434) has been located in the quaint Town of Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin since 1937. This well established, well stocked northwoods sporting goods and gift store concentrates on friendly customer service. Explore their quality line of fishing, hunting, and outdoor gear. At The Tackle Box you’ll find exciting and proven products for the area from Schrade and Old Timer, Shimano and Wolverine. Along with camping equipment, they’ve marina items, too; like Richter Anchors, trolling motors, seat cushions and vests. Make this fishing season the best ever with St. Croix Rods, and the new wireless fish-finder by Humminbird Smartcast! There’s free line winding with a purchase of a reel; and something for the whole family in their “Gift Gallery”. Their huge selection of printed material will greatly inform you of the many attractions in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Visit the Tackle Box on the web at: www.tacklebox.com.

So you’re coming north because you want to get serious about fishing; then it’s time to stop in at Luckey’s Sport Shop. Luckey’s has the right fishing tackle, bait and accessories to help you catch pan fish to lunker muskies! It’s the perfect place to stake  your odds, because they have the knowledge and experience of the local lakes and streams, including the latest “hot” reports as to where the fish are biting, and exactly what they’re biting on. If you plan on bringing a crew of three or more, be sure give Lance a call on Monday’s at (906)-265-0151, so he may reserve a larger portion of bait for you. Shop both Luckey’s Sport Shops in Iron River, Michigan—one is on the east side of town on U.S. 2 ; the west side shop is located on Spruce Street. Check out their full line of hunting ammunition, archery and black powder supplies, too!

If your boat, canoe, or kayak needs repair, MR. ED (906-358-0141) is the man to see! He’ll fix those broken, battered, torn and tattered watercraft and get you back on the water safely and confidently. He specializes in welding aluminum boats and fiberglass repair in Northern Wisconsin, including the Cisco Chain, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. “ I like to give same day or overnight service”, says Ed Wuytack, owner of Mr. Ed’s. “I know how important service time is it is to my customers, and I respect them for that, especially those who are on vacation.” It’s refreshing to know that kind of concern coming from such an expert in the boat repair service. Call Ed today, ‘cause he can help. You’ll find Mr. Ed’s  on Highway 45 just ¼  mile north of U.S. 2 in Watersmeet, Michigan.
