Grayling

Bruce McGuire, of Cedar Motel, sent us the following report on the July 4th weekend. “I’ve been fishing every nighyt until midnight.  We started with the brown drakes and are still fishing the big hex flies.  There have been a lot of reports of big browns over 20 inches being  caught between Wakley Bridge and McMasters Bridge on the main stream of the AuSable. This is the time to catch them.

“The walleye have slowed on Lake Margrethe with the big fly hatches, but will pick up again as the hex draw to an end on the lake.  A friend of mine caught a 14 inch walleye the other  day and had a muskie try and eat it as he was reeling it in.

“The pan fish have been incredible this year. I’ve talked to a lot of people who have caught some huge bluegills and perch in many of the smaller lakes.  Try Howes, Hard Grove, and K.P. Lakes.

“We are getting close to green worm and grass hopper time on all streams. Try fishing grass hoppers, green worms, bumble bees and dry skunk fly patterns on all branches of the Manistee and the AuSable rivers.  It’s a lot of un and in the middle of the day.”

The Cedar Motel conveniently located in the midst of Grayling. A neat 10 unit motel with color TV with HBO, air conditioned, direct dial heat and tub and shower combinations. Open year ‘round. Situated on 606 N. James Street. For reservations call 1-989-348-5884. Hosts Bruce and Cathy McGuire.
