New Jersey Hunting Report
Turkey was king in late April with
many birds being taken throughout the state.
Captain Ron of Dividing Creek Boat Rentals took time off from boat and
motor prep to hunt. He has gotten so proficient in calling gobblers that he actually has
them coming right up onto the front porch of his house. He has bagged three so far this
year the largest tipped the scales over 21 pounds. Jerry Camp from the South Jersey School
of Taxidermy has been hunting everyday He bagged his gobbler early the first day now he
just enjoys helping friends find the elusive birds. Dave at Parsippany Bait & Tackle
reports lots of long beards being taken. Pat Palma brought in a 211/2 pounder, Barry
Holleuffer topped that with a 221/2 bird and Dom Cocitto bagged a double bearded bird. The
season remains open as we go to press we will give a final rap up in our next issue. Our
own Vito Manzi is a Turkey hunting fool. He took off a week from work just for the
pleasure of sitting on soggy ground making strange noises. All this dedication has paid
off Vito has bagged three birds as of this report with a few days left to go.
There were many birds weighed in at Simon Peter's. Frank Fish of
Evelyn's Bird Farm even has gotten away from the cages to find the elusive gobblers in the
wild. As a side note the Editor got a look at Frank's new Incubator, for all you pheasant
hunters if only half of the eggs frank has hatch your season next year should be great.
The response has been so strong that Frank advises all those wishing to hunt at Evelyn's
next fall to book early, the open dates are rapidly disappearing. Remember Evelyn's is
adding about another 100 or so Acres this fall, Hunting should be better than ever.
The new dear hunting regulations are out and as usual they are more
confusing then ever. I suggest you get hold of a copy at stores such as Harry's Army &
Navy in Robinsville and study the changes carefully. This is also a good time of year to
go through your inventory of guns, clothing and accessories and fill in those areas that
need updating. Sales abound in the off season.
