Massachusetts: The fishing up north on the Stellwagen Bank continues to be hot
Captain Mike Bartlett's of B-Fast Charters is seeing more fish than he has seen in
years. The weather, which was a problem early on, is finally starting to cooperate. B-Fast
has had as many as three boats out at the same time and each one is bringing in nice
catches of Cod, Pollack and an occasional Wolf Fish. The Auto Parts of Woodbridge
charter boated over six hundred pounds of Cod mostly Market size, however on the last
drift of the day they hit a school of large Cod to 15 pounds and filled a box in a few
minutes. They have not seen this kind of fishing on the Stellwagen in years. Pollack are
starting to show but the catches of Wolf fish are still disappointing. Captain Mike
believes this has to do with the fact that Cod are still taking Jigs and the amount of
bait fishing is still at a minimum.
Key Largo Florida: The Florida Governors Cup Offshore Tournament was a great success.
The weather for the first two days was perfect with seas running less than two feet.
Sunday was another matter, the winds swung around and started coming out of the North East
seas swelled from gentle two to three foot swells to seven to ten feet monsters. The
catches recorded on Saturday held and only small fish were boated on Sunday. The winning
Dolphin came in at 40 pounds 9 ounces and the next four fish were all within a few ounces
of each other. This Tournament may be significant not for the fish taken but for another
stunning fact. Five of the Seven top finishers were women. Maybe our sport is finally
catching up to society. It was gratifying to see so many women actively enjoying our
pastime. My son Jason and I fished this tournament in the Impossible Quest. I towed my
trusty 20-foot quest from NJ to Florida. I enjoy the chance to meet and talk to nice
people over the CB and in person on the trip South. We led the Wahoo Category for a while
but succumbed to the heavy seas on Sunday. Read the editorial for another point of view on
my trip to Key Largo.
