MADISON LAKE AREA REPORT   

Rick’s Carryout is located south of London on St. Rt. 56. Be sure to stop by Rick’s Carryout for all your bait, tackle, snacks, and Ohio Lottery tickets. Also get the latest fishing report. Rick’s Carryout now accepts Visa, Master Card and Discovery for your convenience. If you are hungry, stop by and ask Rick to make you a fresh deli sandwich – they can’t be beat.

Rick says March was producing lots of panfish and bass in the local ponds. Some saugeye were also being caught in the Spillway at Deer Creek

Pappy’s Anglers Parlor reports the end of March was producing hundreds of crappies (15” crappies were common) at Madison Lake. Last year 4 or 5 17”+ crappies were caught (white crappie) – who knows, maybe a new state record will be caught at Madison Lake this year. Lots of channel cats up to 10 lbs. were also being caught.

DEER CREEK AREA REPORT

Arrow Carryout and Stuff is located on St. Rt. 207 on the south side of Mt. Sterling. They have the areas largest selection of tackle. They also sell live bait, ammo, hunting and camping supplies, propane, firewood, snacks, pop and carryout wine, beer and liquors.

LAKE & ASHTABULA COUNTIES AREA REPORT

Grand River Tackle reports some steelhead are being caught in the river.

The steelhead  were in all the area creeks at the end of March. Jigs tipped with maggots and egg sacks were the best producers. As of  mid-March the leaders of the steelhead contest were 1st Larry Davis 35” 15 lb. 9 oz. 2nd Raleigh Guise, Jr. 34.4” 15 lbs. 6 oz. 3rd Dale Telischak 34.14” 13 lb. 3 oz.

By the time you read this the walleye fishing should be heating up in the Grand River.

DWB Sports reports some steelhead were being caught at the end of March.

As of March 15th  the leaders of the steelhead contest were: 1st  Larry Davis 15 lbs. 12 oz. 34 ¾”  2nd Ted Heaton 15 lbs. 8 oz. 33 ¼” 3rd George Simpson 13 lbs. 3 oz.

MOSQUITO LAKE AREA REPORT

Linda at Monty’s Mosquito Lake Carryout reports the fishing was going strong. Lots of walleyes and crappies were being caught at the end of March. Monty’s has everything that you need from a great breakfast to delicious broasted chicken. They also have a complete bait and tackle shop. What more can you ask for, right, nothing. ROCKY RIVER AREA REPORT

Pete, at L & D Bait and Tackle reports lots of steelheads were being caught in March.

What a thrill, a lucky angler caught a lake trout in the Rocky River. Pete has been around the lake fishing for over 20 years and this is the 1st and only lake trout that he knows was caught in the Rocky River.

VERMILION AREA REPORT         

Rich’s Hook, Line & Sinker is about to tell a closely held secret. You don’t have to drive all the way to the Rocky, Chagrin or Grand Rivers. That’s right – the Vermilion River is a hot spot for big steelhead. Be sure you stop by Rich’s for all your fishing supplies and the up to date hot spots.

LAGOON DEER PARK AREA REPORT

Lagoon Deer Park is now open April 1st for fishing. Jeff’s trout lake is full of delicious and feisty rainbow trout. These babies can really smoke a Mepps spinner or a roostertail. They also love shiner minnows fished with a bobber. If you have cabin fever and want to catch a delicious dinner, grab your pole and kids and head for Lagoon Deer Park. They are conveniently located west of Sandusky on State Route 269. They are only a half mile south of St. Rt. 2, or a half mile north of St. Rt. 6.

Don’t forget to take the kids to see all the animals at Deer Park. They have over 200 animals and it’s really fun to feed them and watch them play. The animal and petting zoo will open in May. We will have the opening date in next months issue.

SANDUSKY BAY AREA  REPORT

Driftwood Efficiency Cottages is looking forward to a fantastic fishing season in 2003. If you haven’t stayed at Driftwood Cottages you do not know what you are missing. My family has been taking a weeks vacation there every summer for the past 20 years and we really enjoy it.  Their accommodations are great. The fishing is fantastic and the people are friendly. March was producing some excellent fishing with lots of saugeyes being taken. Try fishing the beach area. By the time you read this the panfishing should also being going strong.

North Shore Bait reports the end of March was producing limits of saugeyes (from the bank) all over the lake. Minnows fished with floating jigs about 8” off bottom was the best producer. Some nice stripers were also being caught on chicken liver fished on bottom. Lots of channel cats were also being caught. TAPPAN & CLENDENING LAKES AREA REPORT

North Bay Cottages are now open for the fishing season. East Fork Lake has to be Ohio’s hottest crappie lake. They catch them year round as long as they can get a boat on the lake. Mike at The Boarshead reports it won’t be long before the 2003 crappie tournaments start. Why don’t you stop by and talk to Mike for additional information.

CAMP DENIS AREA REPORT     

Camp Denis has been known for years as a great place to go grouse or bear hunting or walleye and pike fishing. Now it is fast gaining a reputation as a place to hunt moose. The owners of Camp Denis have just bought 4 new moose camps to add to their operation. (This now makes 12 outpost camps.)

Camp Denis has 13 cabins. They all have bathrooms with flush toilets. Over half of their cabins also have showers, the rest of the cabins will soon be built with their own showers.

Last year the walleye fishing was better than excellent with the largest weighing in at over 13 pounds.

Ray Greene and I had a chance to hunt turkeys last spring at Rolling Hills. We heard lots of gobblers, and passed up a few jakes. Unfortunately we couldn’t control Mother Nature and her thunderstorms. Every time it thundered you could hear the gobblers answer back. It was a great hunt and we can’t wait to go back again this turkey season.

MOOR-AKER LAKES AREA REPORT

Moor-Aker Lakes will open on April 15th and they are located on St. Rt. 35 (just 1 mile west of I-71). They have 3 grass banked lakes, 2 for adults and 1 just for the kids. They also have camper and tent camping free for their fishermen.

If you are looking for a clean lake that is stocked with lots of big fish, you’re looking for Moor-Aker Lakes.

Moor-Aker Lakes has not only 3 weekly jackpots, but Moor-Aker Lakes will give you a free fishing pass for every catfish that you catch that weighs over 12 lbs. LAKE GLORIA PAY LAKE AREA REPORT

Lake Gloria Pay Lake is now open for your fishing pleasure. This family owned 15 acre lake has been in business since 1948. They are stocked with trout, burbot, channel and blue cats, crappie, bluegill, bass and carp. This lake is stocked every Friday.

Lake Gloria also has a clean clubhouse with delicious hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks, pop, beer and liquor. They also have a large variety of live bait and tackle. They are open 6:30 a.m. till dark, depending on the weather. They also have a jackpot and pay a bounty on all cats 10 pounds and over.

NEFF’S FISHING HOLE AREA REPORT

This could be one of Ohio’s best kept catfishing secrets!  Neff’s Pay Lake & Campground offers two beautiful spring-fed lakes for great fishing fun, cabins and camping. Located at 1297 Higby Rd. between Chillicothe and Waverly in secluded Pike County. Neff’s customers say things like “Great catfishing tournaments” “One of the nicest and cleanest pay lakes in the state” and “GREAT” for handicapped people. Call Neff’s for more details and directions.

Neff’s will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily for your fishing pleasure. They have lots of tagged fish. Neff’s will be holding tournaments every Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. They need a minimum of 30 fishermen to pay back each hour and biggest fish of the night. They also have a maximum of 55 fishermen.

T-TWO PAY LAKES AREA REPORT

T-Two Pay Lakes has beautiful lakes full of catfish. Don’t forget, T-Two Pay Lakes have jackpots and tagged fish. Highland Lakes, formerly known as Whippoorwill Lakes, are located on McAfee Road. Take St. Rt. 62 (3 miles south) to Concord Road. Go east 6 miles to McAffee Road – turn right. It might be a little out of the way, but boy is it worth it. These 2 lakes and their setting is absolutely beautiful. Best of all, these lakes are stocked full of shovelheads, bluecats and channel cats.

The owners are Michele and Jeff Burleson. They have the lakes in great shape. They also offer a tagged fish, weekly, monthly, a 35 lb.to 44 lb., a 45 lb. to 54 lb. and a 55 lb. and over jackpots. They have also remodeled the bait shop with lots of tackle, food and drinks.

New for 2003, Highland Lakes is offering outdoor family movies on Friday and Saturday nights at 9 p.m., kids fishing contest on Saturday from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., and a Saturday 9 p.m. – 11 p.m. a free 2 person team fishing contest. Also, they will have a game room that will be opening soon.

REI LAKES FISHING & CAMP GROUNDS REPORT

There has been a well kept secret for many years in the Springfield area. Now this secret is out. Rei Lakes Fishing and Camping Grounds located on Crabill Road south of Springfield.

Sportsman’s Paradise also carries live bait and tackle. They are now open for your fishing pleasure.

LAKE COZY-DALE PAY LAKES & CAMPING AREA REPORT

Lake Cozy-Dale Pay Lakes and Campground is now open. No shad are allowed at Lake Cozy-Dale (dead or alive). They have 2 lakes filled with shovelheads, bluecats, channel cats, panfish, trout and burbot. Lake Cozy-Dale is now open for fishing.

The new lake is a 4 acre lake and the old lake is a little over 2 acres.

They also have 40 campsites with full hookups and primitive camping. They have a new bait shop, shelters, sandwiches, ice and pop. They also have clean restrooms with flush toilets.

This place is too good to pass up, check out Lake Cozy-Dale Pay Lakes and Campgrounds – TODAY!

Lake Cozy-Dale has a tagged 76 lb. shovelhead that is worth $2,500.00 (if you pay 25 cents to enter before you catch it.)

“OLE SUPER K” LAKES AREA REPORT

“Ole Super K” is located on U.S. 68 between Fayetteville and Midland. (Between Rt. 50 and Rt. 28 on U.S. 68). They not only have 2 lakes stocked full of big shovelheads, bluecats, and channel cats but they also have a shaded campground. “Ole Super K” pays a 50 cent a lb. bounty on all catfish 12 lbs. and up. They also have contests on all the major holiday weekends. Memorial, 4th of July and Labor Day. “Ole Super K” is open. So get your gear ready and start thinking about catching the big one.

Flash – “Ole Super K” is now open. Their hours will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. till dark. Night fishing will start when the weather warms up.

LONG’S PAY LAKE AREA REPORT

Long’s Pay Lake is all geared up for this years fishing season. This lake is stocked with lots of BIG shovelheads, bluecats and delicious farm raised channel cats. New for 2003 – 3 tagged fish jackpots, $500.00 bounty shovelhead. Saturday night tournaments paying $50.00 1st per hour and $25.00 2nd per hour (minimum of 30 fishermen). Check out this months ad for information on Memorial Day Friday and Saturday night tournaments.

Long’s Pay Lake also has a full line bait and tackle shop, shelters, picnic tables and primitive camping.

Call your buddies and plan a fishing trip this year to Long’s Pay Lake.

WOW! WOW! WOW! WOW! Long’s Pay Lake was hot at the end of March. Lots of shovelheads up to 40 lbs. were caught plus a 49 lb. and 51 lb. shovelhead. Some blues up to 30 lbs. were also being caught. Cut bait was the best producer.

ROHR’S PAY LAKE AREA REPORT

Rohr’s Lake is located south of St. Rt. 224 west of Nova, Ohio. Just follow the signs. They are stocked with bluecats up to 52 pounds, channel cats, bass, panfish, and rainbow trout.

My son, Shawn and I fished at Rohr’s Lake several years ago and we had a great time catching crappies and channel cats. If you are looking for a clean, fun place to fish, give Rohr’’ Lake a try. You’ll love it.

Rohr’s Lake also has a shaded campground that looks out over their beautiful lake.

ZANESVILLE AREA REPORT

Sportsman One-Stop has new owners and a new look with walls busting with new inventory. They have re-opened their Drive-Thru and restocked with beer, pop, cigarettes, snacks, and loaded up on bait and tackle. Their prices are the best in town. They will also be giving away a rod and reel combo each month (March – October) and a few T-shirts or hats. There’re  located just 1 mile from Dillon Lake, with all your bass, crappie, bluegill, saugeye and catfish needs. They also sell hunting and fishing licenses. They also accept debit and credit cards.  Ohio lottery is coming soon. Remember, if you are going to Longs Paylake – there’re  just 15 minutes away on St. Rt. 146 West.

SKY LAKE AREA REPORT

Sky Lake is located about 1 ½ miles west of St. rt. 7 on Co. Rd. 32. They have a 5 ½ acre lake and a 2 acre lake. Both lakes are stocked weekly with farm raised channel cats (2,500 to 3,000 lbs.) and  shovelheads and blue cats (approx. 2,000 lbs. a week). They have a $1,000.00 weekly jackpot plus tagged fish. The small lake has 3 tagged fish for $100.00 and 1 for $500.00. The big lake has 4 fish tagged for $100.00 and 1 for $500.00. (more tagged fish to be added soon.)

Sky Lake also has delicious food, pop and snacks. They also have clean restrooms, live bait and tackle. There is plenty of room for trailers, tents and parking. This is a perfect place for families, church groups or organizations. Best of all, Sky Lake is now open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This is one of the best lakes in Ohio. They have a 100% clean fishing area on gravel. A new club house, good food and lots of fish – what more can you ask for?

ROBIN’S HOG HEAVEN PAY LAKE

Robin’s Hog Heaven Pay Lake is already getting the area catfishermen excited. This new lake is located on Swope Road in Bethel, Ohio. The amazing thing is it won’t open till spring 2004. Everybody must remember the quality lake that Robin used to run (Hazenfield’s Hawg Heaven) and all the big quality cats that she had swimming in her lake. Robin is digging as fast as possible but unfortunately you will have to wait 1 more year. You can stop by or call Robin to check out the construction or just say hi!

RAINBOW LAKES AREA REPORT

Rainbow Lakes is now open for your fishing pleasure. They have 11 lakes stocked full of shovelheads, channel cats, jumbo carp, rainbow trout and panfish pike, bullheads. They are located on St. Rt. 235 just south of St. Rt. 4, Fairborn, Ohio. This is just minutes from Dayton, Springfield, Xenia or New Carlisle. They are definitely worth the drive. They also have a large variety of live bait and all the tackle, including rods and reels, to land those big hawgs. Make the drive, have fun and catch lots of big fish.     

LAKE JULIE ANN AREA REPORT

Lake Julie Ann is located 2 ½ miles west of St. Rt. 128 in Miamistown. They have a 7 ½ acre and 4 ½ acre lake. Both lakes are stocked with shovelheads, blue cats, channel cats and big carp. They have weekly jackpots for both big cats and big carp, they also have a 40 lb. and over catfish jackpot and a 25 lb. and over carp jackpot.

Lake Julie Ann also has a tournament every Saturday from 7 p.m. till 11 p.m. They also have holiday weekend contests. Stop by or call for additional information. You can also pick up your live bait, tackle, food, firewood and primitive camping.

Lake Remington has been stocked with lots of delicious rainbow trout. The crappie fishing was excellent at the end of March. Lake Remington is stocked with bass, crappie, bluegill, carp, bluecat, shovelhead and stocked weekly with farm raised channel cats.

They have a full line bait and tackle shop. They also have snacks and soda.

There is plenty of room for tents and campfires around this 80 year old spring fed 8 ½ acre fishing lake. Coming soon – a drive-thru carryout.

BLOOM LAKE AREA REPORT

Bloom Lake has pulled off the nearly impossible. YEP! They found a 100 lb. bluecat for their lake. This 4 ½ foot monster was taken from the Mississippi River. They have a special $2.00 jackpot on this brute that pays $200.00 if you catch him.

Don’t forget Bloom Lake has 2 lakes stocked full of big shovelheads, bluecats, farm raised channel cats and lots of panfish. They also have a clean indoor restroom and a small restaurant with delicious home cooked food. (Take my word for it, I always try to be there at lunch time).

WINDMILL FISHING LAKE AREA REPORT

Windmill Lakes is located in Warren County just off E. St. Rt. 22-3 on Strout Road in Clarksville, Ohio.

Come see for yourself this enlarged 3 acre lake that offers you that quiet, clean atmosphere to relax and enjoy catching the big one. The lake has been heavily stocked with large shovelhead and bluecats. Weekly jackpots and a 45 lb. & over jackpot are held.

New for 2003 – Windmill has a 2nd lake open for this fishing season. This lake is a deep 1 ½ acre lake stocked full of delicious farm raised channel cats and some shovelheads and bluecats. Windmill Lakes are open on Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. till 7 p.m. When warmer weather finally comes they will go to normal fishing hours.

Flash – Check out the $2,000.00 Memorial Day contest. It will run from 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 21st till 6 p.m. Monday, May 26th. Entry fee is $15.00 for 12 hours for 2 poles. They will pay 1st $750.00, 2nd $600.00, 3rd $350.00, 4th $200.00 and 5th $100.00. There will be no bounty or tagged fish paid during this tournament. Normally they pay 50 cents bounty for all cats 25 lbs. and over or a free ticket if you catch 3 cats weighing 15 lbs. to 25 lbs.

LAZY DOG CAMP – RESORT AND PAY LAKE

Lazy Dog Camp – Resort and Pay Lake is located next to Noah’s Ark Animal Farm on St. Rt. 32, 5 miles east of Jackson, Ohio. Their name is new (they used to be called Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park & Pay Lake) but their great clean campground and well stocked pay lake are the same.

In one stop you can have great fun for the whole family while the kids tour the animal farm. Dad can fish in the well stocked lake. They have farm raised channel cats, big cats and shovelheads. There are also tagged fish so can you can win some money too.

ATWOOD LAKE AREA REPORT

Lakeside Carryout is located on Magnolia Road, SW (St. Rt. 542), just an eighth of a mile north of Atwood Lake. They carry a complete line of tackle, including a large selection of artificial baits. Lakeside Carryout also has a large selection of live bait. They have everything from shiners to maggots. They also have carryout beer and wine, plus pop, snacks, and ice. Stop by Lakeside Carryout for all your fishing needs.

The crappie fishing is going strong at Atwood Lake. Some dandy saugeyes are also being caught.

HOOVER RESERVOIR AREA

Red Banc Harbor Bait & Tackle is now open for this years fishing season. They not only sell bait and tackle, but also have all fishing and hunting licenses, knives, snacks, pop, lucky bamboo plants, outboard motor sales and service plus they buy and process raw fur.

Red Banc Harbor reports the white bass were hitting at the end of March. Some nice catches of catfish are also being made. By the time you read this, the crappies and saugeyes should be hitting.

HURON AREA REPORT

Huron River Valley Resort is located on 70 acres by the Huron River, not far from the entrance to Lake Erie. The river channel is deep all the way to the lake. They have overnight and seasonal campsites with full hookups or tent camping. You can even get river sites with your own dock. They also have a boat ramp and a marina. They have flush toilets, hot showers, a camp store, firewood and even have charter boats available. Huron River Valley Resort also has great bank fishing. If you are not a camper, you can still fish for only $5.00 a day.
