We have had another
tremendous week of fishing on the Lake of the Woods!
Stable weather
conditions have contributed to an excellent bite…
The Northwest Angle and
Islands are reporting excellent fishing.
Walleye, bass, sauger
and jumbo perch of noteworthy size are being brought in by
anglers. Some of the guides are fishing near Garden Island in
16-20 feet of water. Resorters around Oak Island report good
fishing, with lots of walleye and perch being caught on quarter
ounce gold jigs.
One party brought in a
beautiful 30" walleye over the weekend fishing three miles from
Oak Island.
Rainy River anglers are
having good luck landing lots of eating-sized walleyes and saugers.
The current in the Rainy is the strongest in the middle, and
anglers are having their best luck at the current break on the
shelf. Gold and glow, "Wobblers," seem to be the favored
presentation.
Areas around the South
Shore report great fishing with lots of walleyes, jumbo perch and
northerns coming in. Anglers are out about eight miles off of Pine
Island in approximately 26-32 feet of water. As far as what works
the best for catching them seems to depend on who you talk to, but
the most common presentations continue to be anything light or
bright and quarter ounce jigs that glow.

Local snowmobile trails
have been recently groomed and all forest trails are in excellent
condition. Trails north of Highway 11 are in good condition, along
with those in the Beltrami Island State Forest. There continues to
be logging south of Birchdale, and near the Northern Connection
Trail by Big Falls, so ride in these areas with caution.
There are also reports
of slush and thin ice on sections of the Rainy River and its
tributaries. The staked trail to the Northwest Angle and Islands
is groomed on a weekly basis and is in good condition. Exercise
caution when travelling on the ice and be sure to watch for other
riders.
Come on up to Lake of
